Abstract. Recent records of Herpsilochmus pectoralis (Pectoral Antwren) in the state of Maranhão are presented, as well as comments on the conservation and geographic distribution of this taxon. The records occurred in the municipalities of Arari, Bacabeira, Caxias, Humberto de Campos and Itapecuru Mirim.
The species was found in forest environments in varied stages of regeneration, totalizing 21 individuals detected. The main threats to the conservation of this taxon in Maranhão are the loss of habitat and the reduction of the environmental quality, triggered by the anthropic activities. It is necessary to create new conservation units of integral protection in Maranhão, in order to protect H. pectoralis and other endangered species that have their confirmed occurrence for the mentioned regions, since the Environmental Protection Area of Baixada Maranhense is the only area destined to the protection of the natural resources in the mentioned municipalities and with the advance of the environmental modifications, the species can have its populations reduced in the state, since it is a unit of conservation of sustainable use. Keywords: Baixada Maranhense
