o Sr. Giuseppe P. Mignone aborda a psicologia do comportamento animal observada em casais
de diamante mandarim e diamante de Gould. Experiências demonstraram a melhor performance
reprodutiva quando o controle se verifica no sentido naturalístico. Num resumo de tese de
mestrado a Sra. Maria Luisa da Silva descreve o repertório vocal do sabiá-laranjeira (Turdus
rufiventris), provando sua enorme variação e que não existe característica
populacional comum com formação de dialetos.

Experiments have shown a better reproductive performance when the control occurs in the naturalistic sense. In an abstract from a mastering tesis, Ms. Maria Luisa da Silva describes the vocal repertory of sabiá-laranjeira (Turudus rufiventris), confirming its enormous variation and that doesn't exists common populacional caracteristic in the genesis of dialets.

Uma colaboração internacional de quebra-galho está ajudando no esforço para recuperar
a arara mais rara do mundo, a ararinha-azul-de-Spix, Cyanopsitta spixxi, que está
à beira da extinção. Os biólogos que estão na área do projeto no Brasil se viram
diante de um grande problema: como observar ovos na base profunda, convoluta e muito
escura nos buracos-ninhos das araras. O principal patrocinador que dá suporte ao projeto,
a Loro Parque Fundación de Tenerife, Espanha, descobriu a solução ideal: um endoscópio
flexível. Pela transmissão de uma forte luz através de fibras ópticas, esse
instrumento de alta tecnologia é normalmente usado na medicina humana para exame interno
onde o médico necessita observar áreas difíceis e inacessíveis. Naturalmente, a Loro
Parque Fundación não tinha um em mãos, mas a ajuda foi obtida dos hospitais Royal
Liverpool e Broadgreen University, Inglaterra, os quais doaram não somente um, mas dois
endoscópios flexíveis. Esses instrumentos de antiga geração, agora inteiramente
obsoletos para o uso na medicina humana, foram escolhidos como a solução ideal para o
dilema da arara.
A
ground-breaking international collaboration is helping the effort to recover the world's
rarest parrot, the Spix's Macaws Cyanopsitta spixii, from the brink of extinction.
Biologists at the project site in Brazil faced a real problem - how to see eggs at the
botton of deep, convoluted and very dark macaw nest-holes. Principal financial supporter
of the project, the Loro Parque Fundación of Tenerife, Spain knew of the ideal hi-tech
instrument is normally used in human medicine for internal examination where the
consultant needs to view inaccessible and difficult areas. Naturally, the Loro Parque
Fundación did not have one to hand, but help was on its way from the Royal Liverpool and
Broadgreen University Hospitals, England, which donated not just one, but two flexible
endoscopes. These older generation instruments, now entirely obsolete for use in human
medicine, were selected as being the ideal solution to the macaw dilemma.
Mas, havia outro problema. Não
se podia simplesmente conectar um endoscópio no meio da selva brasileira! Esse desafio
foi considerado como um "projeto da hora do lanche" pelos Departamentos dos
Hospitais de Engenharia Clínica os quais fizeram cada instrumento se tornar completamente
portátil modificando a fonte de luz para trabalhar a partir de baterias recarregáveis.
Outros colaboradores para esse sistema amigável do meio ambiente foram Celltech Ltd,
Reino Unido, o qual doou as baterias recarregáveis Yuasa seladas e carregador de bateria,
e Lumitex Inc. of Cleveland, EUA, que doou as altamente poderosas fontes de ondas de luz.
But, there was
a further snag. You cannot simply plug-in an endoscope in the middle of the Brazil
wilderness! This challenge was taken-up as a "lunch-time project" by the
Hospitals' Department of Clinical Engineering which made each instrument completely
portable by modifying the light source to work from rechargeable batteries. Other
contributors to this environmentally-friendly system were Celltech Ltd, UK who donated the
sealed rechargeable Yuasa batteries and battery charger, and Lumitex Inc. of Cleveland,
USA who donated the high-powered woven light sources.

Cada sistema, cuidadosamente
embrulhado na sua caixa travada portátil, foi deixado na Loro Parque Fundación, a qual
posteriormente transportou uma delas para o Brasil para coincidir com o encontro do
Comitê de Recuperação da Ararinha-de-Spix no final de outubro de 96, supervisionado
pela agência governamental brasileira do meio ambiente, IBAMA. Em 26 de outubro, sob o
forte sol brasileiro, os membros da equipe do projeto da Ararinha-de-Spix testaram a
eficiência do endoscópio flexível. O ninho das araras nas maiores árvores da região,
chamadas Caraibeiras, as quais crescem às margens de rios que freqüentemente secam. Uma
dessas com um buraco-ninho a 15 metros de altura foi escolhida e cordas foram instaladas
para içar o conselheiro do projeto, Dr. Carlos Yamashita, até o nível do buraco-ninho.
Após ser içado também o sistema de endoscópio, o Dr. Yamashita foi capaz de observar
claramente a base da cavidade do ninho. Sucesso, afinal!
Each system,
neatly packed into its own padded carrying case, was delivered to the Loro Parque
Fundación, which then transported one of them to Brazil to coincide with the
end-of-October 1996 meeting of the Spix's Macaw Recovery Committee, overseen by the
Brazilian Government wildlife agency, IBAMA. On the 26th of October, under the fierce
Brazilian sun, the Spix's Macaw Project team members tested the effectiveness of the
flexible endoscope. The macaws nest in the largest trees of the region, called caraibeira
trees, which grow along the frequently dry water-courses. One of these with a 15 meters
high nest-hole was selected and ropes installed to hoist project advisor, Dr. Carlos
Yamashita, up to the level of the nest-hole. After hoisting up the endoscope system as
well, Dr. Yamashita was able to clearly see the bottom of the nest cavity. Success, at
last!
Somente uma ararinha-de-Spix,
um macho, agora existe na natureza, apesar de haver 39 aves cativas registradas no livro
internacional para essa espécie. A ararinha-de-Spix macho livre está acasalada com uma
maracanã-verdadeira fêmea Ara maracana, e esse par misturado é intimamente
monitorado por biólogos do projeto. Eles sabem que a fêmea maracanã põe ovos, embora
inférteis, e choca-os normalmente. Essa situação, conseqüentemente, apresenta uma boa
opção no futuro para estabelecer ararinhas-de-Spix na natureza, por disponibilizar a
transferência de ovos de um par criado em cativeiro para um ninho na natureza. Um projeto
piloto será conduzido com araras maracanãs, mas para transferir ovos necessita-se
primeiro vê-los, e por isso o papel indispensável dos endoscópios portáteis
modificados. Junto ao suporte das pessoas brasileiras locais, esse evento ressalta a
excelente colaboração internacional para salvar o psitacídeo mais raro do mundo.
Only one Spix's Macaw, a male, now exists in the wild, although there are 39 captive birds registered in the international studbook for this species. The wild male Spix's Macaw is paired with a female Illiger's Macaw Ara maracana, and this mixed pair is closely monitored by the project biologists. They know that the female Illiger's Macaw lays eggs, albeit infertile, and incubates them normally. This situation therefore presents a good future option to establish more Spix's Macaws in wild, by means of transferring eggs from breeding pairs in the captive population to the wild nest. A pilot project will be conducted with Illiger's Macaws, but to transfer eggs you first need to see them, and hence the indispensable role of the portable modified endoscopes. Together with the support of the local Brazilian people, this event reinforces the excellent international collaboration to save the world's rarest parrot. Dr.David Waugh
